Debut: How to Make a DC: "Azrael" Costume

In 2022, I created the Azrael Batman suit from the Knightfall comic book series. After I was done wearing that costume for few eld, I thought that the next organic evolution of the costume should exist the traditional red and gold version that Azrael wears afterwards. For the 2022 Chicago Comic Entertainment Expo, my friends and I distinct to go as a Batman themed group and then I thought it would be the perfect excuse to produce the next rendition of Azrael.

For those of you who serve not know Azrael, here is the back story: The scoundrel Nemesis broke the back of Robert I Wayne, aka Batman, in the comic books. Well, Gotham unruffled needed protecting sol Bruce recruited Jean Paul Valley to study the cape of the Batman while he he recovered. It seemed like a great thought until Jean Paul started going a little overboard and violently brutalized villains. He starts to build his own version of a Batman suit and eventually calls himself Azrael. Bruce eventually heals up and takes the mantle of Batman spine, just for a patc, Azrael patrolled the streets of Gotham. Afterwards, Azrael dons his own costume and becomes part of the Batman family.

Now that you know the character, prepared to read how I made this costume? Let's get started!

Step 1: Reference Pictures

Before I ever start Whatsoever costume, I consult a ton of reference photos from assorted sources and put together it in a folder. The Sir Thomas More pictures from various angles, the better. Look up: 1. Existent photos of the character from its source (movies, comics, action figure, etc)

2. Cosplay pictures. You can see what has been done, what you like, what you father't wish, how to improve on a design. You can also start getting an theme of different poses you think you'd similar to answer.

3. I start look at artistic creation work. I usually refer things via google images, deviant art, tumblr, etc. This way of life, you can see unusual renditions of a character through a unused perspective and over again, start thinking about what you like, Don River't like, etc.

4. Use your own mental imagery. Toy with what you want, how to make IT your own original design, what are close to tricks you think you'd like to incorporated.. perhaps you want to try out a new technique with this build, etc

5. If you can puff, I sometimes will take all my acknowledgment sources and begin draftsmanship out my own conception

6. I was very fortunate that this Azrael suit is basically a slightly different variation of the Azrael Batman suit. Hence, i was capable to use that costume as a template thusly i didn't have to start completely from scratch up when creating templates.

Step 2: Mask

1. For this version of Azrael, I've seen a few cosplayers stimulate fabric masks. In the old 90s comics, his mask also seems to represent made of fabric (pic 1). However, other illustrations have show the masqu to be something hard and sturdy (pic 2)

2. I personally likable a sturdy very, as I personally would not like to fight law-breaking in a a ski masquerade party (Sorry Spider-Mankin!)

3. I actually had a 3d Printed hard mask that i used A a template. If you don't cause one, you derriere bollix up a bunch of clothes into elastic bag and concealment in epithelial duct tape to use a mannequin.

4. So since the mask is symmetrical, i know that i only need to draw out fractional a mask for templates. I took my masking paper and blanketed the right side of the face. I cut where the oculus would be and also drew in my pattern. I knew that i would be wearing a hood, so i didnt have to create a full helmet (which would also foreclose overheating). (pic 3)

5. Using your exacto knife, carefully cut off the screenin tape pieces (pic 4)

6. Transport the tape recording to paper (pic 5)

7. Conveyance the patterns onto your thinner EVA foam. Flip the paper templates when you are transferring them to froth in enjoin to get the other side of the mask.

8. Glue all your EVA effervesce pieces together. You can use hot glue or contact cementum. However, i personally prefer contact cement at this poin in the game. (pic 6)

9. Now take more tape and put away it over the mouth area of your EVA foam mask. Evoke your design (pic 7)

10.Manipulation that videotape template and transfer to a patch of report. Then use that paper template and cut out the design from a piece of thin craft foam. Glue in place. You can also see that i injured two grooves higher up the middle sockets. I was thinking of adding a slender gold therein line to bestow some slight color variation to the face when i painted it (pic 8-10)

Step 3: Shoes

These pictures are not from this specific fles, but the premiss is just the same

1. Take one of your boots and cover in masking paper. Realize foreordained to not videotape over the zipper. (picture show 1)

2. Now look at your reference pictures and draw the design on your screenin taped thrill. Add up the pieces on your boots so you know how to attach them onto the boot (moving picture 2 )

3. Take your exacto knife and carefully cut down your shapes while they are still on the boots. (pic 3)

4. Transfer your shapes onto your EVA foam and cut out. If your fizz has the diamond tread happening the nates, use your sander to sand smooth.

5. I use my dremel and shape and bevel them a trifle to remove the hard edge.

6. Take your head gun and stretch the pieces so that they mold well to the boot.

7. Use contact cementum and glue connected.(motion-picture show 4)

8. Use your masking tape templates to make up foam pieces for the other shoe. Yet, remember that you undergo to interchange the paper pieces over before you draw them because your shoes are flipped. (pic 5)

Step 4: Knees and Shins

Knee Pads

1. Meter your knee, transfer it to wallpaper and fold in half

2.draw in your details on the folded paper (pic 1)

3. Create your layers from EVA foam (pic 2)

4. Glue your layers together and then add your inside information with craft foam (pic 3)

Shin Guards

1. Measure up your shin with your shoes on, transfer the measurements to theme and fold in half

2.draw your details on the folded wallpaper, trimmed out and transfer stencil to EVA foam, and cut out complete your pieces of EVA foam(pic 4+5)

3. I first start by gluing in a border around the shin patch. Take a dismantle of EVA foam and glue it around the perimeter. Then use your dremel to round it out. (pic 6)

4. Glue your layers together (pic 7)

5. I used a rectangular set up of eva foam for the back of my calf and sandwich my calf in between the front art object and bet on bit of eva foam. I distinguish where everything fits and then paste everything together so i have a piston chamber.

6. I cut conventional Down the back of the shinny to open information technology up. I used black buckles in the back of the sputter pieces to close them (motion-picture show 8, from the previous Azrael Batman build, but concept is exactly the same) you can add your designs to the rearward at this time .

7. I use fabric to associate the shin while to the knee joint piece. I just utilise the cloth the like a bridge in between some pieces. I utilise elastic for the knee piece to strap around my knee for stabilisation.

8. this is how they shins/ knees/ and shoes can look (moving-picture show 9)

Step 5: Private parts & Whack

Genitals

1. Quantity your waist and cut a strip of EVA foam that size. I usually just use the width of the ruler i am using, which is 1.5 inches.

2. Create your codpiece by measuring the sides of your groin you said it long it needs to be. Transfer the measurements onto paper and then onto fizz (pic 1). Cut proscribed your trilateral crotch put together

3. I cherished to create an edge so i used the soldering iron to burn a groove down the back of the codpiece. place warming glue in groove, hold the codpiece in the position and wait for glue to completely air-cooled (pic 2)

4. Add your inside information. I exploited some craftiness fizz to add little sections to the codpiece hither and there. I used the soldering iron to create some burns and then use the hole punch to hook verboten more or less pieces(pic 3 (pic is not from this build, but introduc is the same)

5. You can do the same work with the butt piece. Mensurate your butt piece, transfer to paper, so transfer to EVA foam and coat dead.

6. The furrow of the belt will get on your side, and that agency, you can put on the undies and all the same take the crotch and the butt-piece intact. glue your belt to your crotch piece (pic 4)

7. I sometimes take some fabric and gum it onto the seam of the codpiece. I also use a pick of elastic to connect the tip of the codpiece of the middle of the butt piece (so that the elastic goes in between your legs)

8. I volition past create a cris-cross pattern on the back of the belt and give up the lines with a heat torpedo. I will then glue a strip of fabric onto the back of the belt so that it does not stretch complete time. (pic 5)

Bang

9. This version of Azraels suit of clothes has a super wide belt. I guess i made information technology 6 inches or so and then glued it over the airstrip that is already attached to the crotch piece.

10. i secondhand an exacto knife to cut in details and too added craft foam for extra layers (pic 6)

Step 6: Thighs

1. take your measurements for your thigh and transfer them to a paper template (pic 1)

2. transfer the guide to your EVA foam and use your heat grease-gun to hearty the foam and shape it. (picture show 2)

3. Place the front thigh piece against your thigh and make over a rachis thigh piece out of foam. Glue the seams together

4. From there, you rear end start adding any type of detail you would ilk. (pic 3)

5. economic consumption layers, a soldering iron to burn in grooves, and a heat gun and exacto knife to cut in lines. (pic 4-7, pics 5-7 are from the previous Azrael build, but the lower half is almost on the nose the same except for the belt and the shin fins)

Step 7: Abdomen

1. Start out with taking a measurement of your abdomen and your chest.

2. Cut out a paper straightarrow with the measurements so flexure the newspaper publisher vertically in one-half. (pic 1)

3. Draw unfashionable every your details and shape. Since your armour wish be symmetrical, you only have to draw it stunned on one side. (pic 2)

4.rent the whole abdomen strip and cut the whole piece out of EVA foam.

5.Bring down each piece extinct from the paper, but save all the templates so you know where to glue everything. (moving picture 3)

6. Use up your templates and draw each of the pieces onto EVA foam. (pic 4)

7. Take your wallpaper template and send along the EVA abdomen despoil. Use a sharpie to mark where every last the abdomen pieces are supposed to go.

8. Cut out the pieces (pic 5)

9. Now is the time to make over whatsoever designs in the abdominal cavity pieces. i used a variation of tools the like exacto knives and soldering irons to create holes, crisscross designs, etc. If you want to create lines, and then cut away them with an exacto knife and then use a oestrus gun to open them up a bit.

9. glue all the abdomen pieces and employ buckles in the back to secure it together.

Step 8: Chest Piece

1. Fold your paper bureau template and pen up it in half. Start drawing in your details. (pic 1)

2. unfold your templet and transfer onto EVA froth. (pic 2 +3)

3. Flip the chest piece over and use a soldering iron to create a line shoot down the middle of the chest. fill the groove with hot glue. I too created a ledge connected the bottom of the pectus patch. (flic 4)

4. Now glue the chest piece directly onto the abdomen piece. (photograph 5 +6)

5. Put the bureau piece on and repeat the the operation to create the back piece. quantify your back and remove the measurement to theme. then recur steps 1 and 2. glue the front and hindermost

5. I used the paper template to draw out (pic 7-9) and cut strips of thick and thin EVA foam. (pic 10-11)

6. I then sanded polish off the stride and start gluing happening the strips to the chest opus. (pic 12, Pic from previous Azrael build, but concept the same)

7. Make a point you glue in entirely the strips on both front end and back. Your social movement will have a blank in the center for that downward arrow piece of the suit. (motion picture 13 + 14)

8. For the arrow, measure the length and width and so transfer the dimensions on report. Fold paper in half and draw out your plan. Cut the template out of EVA fizz (photo 15)

9. I in use my dremel to carve in the design of that pointer. Eventually you will attach it to the chest part with developed velcro.

Step 9: Shoulders

1. Use a thicker EVA for the berm as information technology wish give you a more stocky look after.

2. Use your composition template to cut the social movement and hindmost of the shoulder pieces. (pic 1 + 2)

3. use a heat gun to warm leading the EVA and push it into a bowl to curve the pieces. (pic 3)

4. cut a wide EVA strip for the in-between part of the shoulder joint (pic 4)

5. i created an under shelf. (pic 5)

6. Mucilage ledge in place (pic 6)

7. now you can add your inside information with craft foam and grooves by victimization an exacto knife and oestrus gun (pic 7 + 8)

Step 10: Biceps

1. measure your bicep and cut a pillage of paper that volition wrap around your arm.

2. One time you have the measurement down, set about to draw in your design (pic 1 +2)

3. create all your EVA pieces from your paper templates (moving picture 3)

4. i successful sure to add a advanced bicep piece (pic 4)

5. The seam is located happening the inner bicep (pic 5)

6. Here are pictures of the front and back of the bicep pieces (film 6 +7)

Step 11: Body Lawsuit

1. You can use fitted long sleeve tshirt and drawers to create your wallpaper template.

2. You will use your shirt and pants to create paper templates. So use a piece of glass and outline those paper templates on your fabric. (pic 1)

3. Withdraw connected the vest piece, then draw out seperate arm pieces.

4. Sew the front and back of your shirt together. (pic 2, from another fles, but preface is the same)

5. I too cut the shirt pull down the second and put in a zipper. This is because i precious to sew the legs into the shirt. (movie 3, from another build but premise is still the same)

6. You rear end sew your arm sleeves on straightaway.

7. Now use a pair of fitted pants to create a newspaper publisher template for your Legs. Sew your bloomers together (pic 4

from some other build but precede is still the same)

8. Sew your pants to your shirt. (picture 5)

9. Render on everything to make sure it altogether fits well. It should be comfy and not loose (pic 6)

Gold shoulders

9 . Put on your trunk armour and bicep armour

10. Use your chalk mark where your shoulders are visible. (pic 7)

11. Move the lines about an inch over on the fabric, as you want the gold to extend underneath the armor pieces (pic 8)

12. Cut unsuccessful the fabric so use those pieces as a template for your gold fabric (exposure 9)

12. Stitch the new gold shoulder sections back onto the suit (pic 10)

13. I in use an airbrush to dim the fabric and so its not so shiny.

Stair 12: Incomplete Way Point

Try out on whol your pieces with your body suit. Make a point everything fits and closes well at this clock time.

Step 13: Cowling

1. Extend your strong-arme on some paper. The hood itself is quite big and bulbous, so it's better to go big than small. You nates e'er make water it little later if needed. I also knew i wanted a gist piece for the hood so that the hood could have a itty-bitty peak that came down in movement of the face. (pic 1)

2. I shortened out both pieces (motion picture 2)

3. I cut out 4 sides for the hood and 2 for the center. I also cut out some port to give the hood stability. If you assume't have any stiff user interface, your hood might Night sit correctly and will just flop around. (Pic 3)

4. Sew all the pieces together (pic 4)

Stride 14: Cape & Bib

1. I folded my fabric in half so i knew the center of it. I cut a circle at the end of the fabric so my head could fit through. I then sewn the hood onto that hole. Once information technology was sewn connected, i ordered the fabric happening the floor and drew out my design (exposure 1).

2. Try the cape on with your shoes. You deprivation the cape to fitting barely hit the floor. The reason for this is that you dont want anyone stepping on your ness OR it getting caught in an escalator clause. (pic 2)

3. For your bib, Excision a fairly large square shape from your fabric. do this twice, as you will need some less stillness interface sewn in between. (pic 3)

4. Immediately use some of your gold fabric and sew in a gold strip (pic 4)

5. Now you will fold unrivalled sidelong of the bib onto itself. the interface testament lease you keep those nice ridges. Put a fewer stitches in to help the it continue that influence (pic 5)

6. Now sew the bib underneath the color of the cape (pic 6).

7. Time to pull in the emblem. I just measured information technology out, John Drew it on a folded piece of paper (pic 7), curve tabu and transferred to gold fabric.

8. I experimented and put-upon a piece of black puff paint around the edges to get in pop a trifle. Sew together the allegory in place. (pic 8)

9. I created a trifle foam strike from EVA foam and a dremel and attached it to the bib with a safety pin

Step 15: Guantlets

Azrael's flame steel gauntlets are pretty bulbous happening him, then don't be afraid to make them big.

1. Take your syrupy EVA foam and establish a cylinder to the size that you require the gauntlets to be. (pic 1)

2. create circles of EVA foam for the crown and bottom of the cylinder. Do not glue them in until no. (photo 2)

3. Take the circles out and cut down little circles that will fit your write and forearm. You should have 4 "O"s now to glue in (pic 3)

4. wrap some masking tape around the cylinders to curl up your designs. (pic 4). Transfers those to EVA foam to create additional layers (moving picture 5)

5. Forthwith add in your details. I used craft sparkle, smaller strips of EVA, and oriented up some cut lines to create all the details(pic 6)

Step 16: Gloves

1. Start by tracing your hand with spread fingers. Keep in mind, Azrael's gloves only have 4 fingers on them. (pic 1, different build but Lapp premise. Put your pinky and annualry conjointly)

2. outline your hand and lend in a trivial excess border for furrow allowance (pic 2, different build but same premise. Put your pinkie and call up finger together)

3. Now cut this out 4 times (motion-picture show 3, different frame but same premise. Put your pinkie and annualry together)

4. Sew glove together (pic 4)

5. For your feel armor, you will own 2 sides and 1 wide strip. (photograph 5)

6. Number all your pieces so you can keep track of them (pic 6)

7. Glue in your details by using craft foam. Doh Non glue the pieces onto the glove yet, however this is how my gloves turned out. (pic 7 -9)

Step 17: Flame Blades

Not only does Azrael have got these retractable blades that issue forth out of his gauntlets, just course... they light on fervour.. (Easy right?!).. (moving picture 1)

1. I took some foxiness sparkle and cut out the blades. (pic 2)

2. I had some comprehensible worbla thermoplastic. Basically this becomes velvety when you employ heating to it (pic 3)

3. I cut out 4shapes from the worbla and air brushed them to that gradient yellow to orange/red "fire" facial expression" (pic 4)

4. I then sandwiched the foam in between 2 pieces of painted worbla. The Worbla is not sticky, nor does it adhere to itself so i had to bust out the big guns and utilize the E5000 glue.

5. Formerly tearless, lean inactive the inordinateness in a wavy manner soh that it looks like a blade on fire.

6. At present, to add more flare, i used my hot glue gun and the self-cooling system mat. I made a "fin" and let that dry. I made surely to know in a flame way of life, so making sure it wasnt solid.. i made sure thither were some holes and about strands coming from it. (pic 5)

7. once information technology was cool, i started to thicken it heavenward and added a al-Qa'ida so it would sit upright (pic 6)

8. once i was satisfied, glued them onto the worbla blades. (pic 7)

9. I then airbrushed the glue to make it look like flames (pic 8 + 9)

10. I made it soh the blades sat within a channel of the gauntlet. I made them also removable as I'm hoping one and only day to make them actually light up. (pic 10 +11)

Step 18: Caulk, Sealing & Painting

1. Erst everything is built, information technology's time to caulk all the adjoining pieces. Basically, use the caulk to replete in any gaps, unwanted spaces, etc. Also, if you superimposed any foam on top of from each one some other, you should put caulk around the edges. (pic 1 shows the wet caulk in between the joints)

2. Next job is to seal it. If it is foam, i recommend plastidip as it allows for flexibility without neat of paint. However, if you have pieces that will not be moving, bending, or squishing, i commend modernistic podge.(pic 2)

3. Once dry, I begin with house painting all my pieces. As my foam and slyness foam were sometimes different bright colours, I started by painting all my pieces black soh everything had an even foot pelage. Then i painted them the true colors by using acrylic or spray paint (pic 3+ 4)

4. Once everything is painted, protect your paint Book of Job with a clear coat of spray paint

Step 19: Assemblage

Once everything is dry, you can commence full forum. I actually took these pics ahead i finished the men and the upper cape. I was still difficult to figure out how to create them at the time.

1. Install your eye tras lenses. I use the reflective lenses and Dremeled them down a little to fit the spaces. It's okay if they dont sit rich against your mask, as this will prevent fogging and countenance for some air. You can also buy lens defogger if helpful(pic 1 +2)

2. Attach your biceps to the shoulders with elastic.

3. Attach your shoulders to the chest piece with resilient and alligator clips. I use this method because information technology is significantly easier to store when you can ask off the weaponry.

4. Bind the thighs to to the bang victimisation gator clips and elastic, equally this is also easier to store at this fourth dimension.

5. i found that the exercising weight of the of the goon caused it to uncomfortably rest against my make out. Thus i attached an bulldog clip underneath the bib and had information technology clip onto a piece of fabric that i glued into the inside of the chest piece.

6. I added amber thumbtacks to act Eastern Samoa "rivets" and give back the courting some extra inside information.

7. This is a good time to see about your mobility in the suit. Move and walk more or less. Run across if anything pinches or is uncomfortable.

Gradation 20: Top Cape

This top cape was the rattling last affair I was stuck nerve-racking to solve. It's au fond made from 2 layers of foam.

1. Draw a collar shape that will sit some your neck an shoulders. cut out of Eva froth. Let's call this your "take down layer". You will rouge this the coloration of your mantle. You can also attach a agile sackin heave in the back, as nary one and only will see it. (pic 1)

2. Draw a template for the battlefront "square" looking pieces.(pic 2)

3. Since the are all staggered in height, you will feature to chop them into sections. pull in sure you mark them so you be intimate their order (motion-picture show 3)

4. Cut each small-arm out of EVA effervesce and glue together at varying heights, like steps. Lets call this your "upper layer" (movie 4)

5. Turn the pep pill bed over and cut in grooves for your dress hanger wire. (pic 5)

6. Glue in your clothes hanger wire. This bequeath give the upper layer enough strength so it doesn't flop or sag down (movie 6)

7. Cover the whole upper layer with fabric (pic 7)

8. Create long strips of fabric for the rest of this top cape. Utilisation a template. I used a strip of duct tape and attached information technology to paper. (pic 8)

9. you will need 3 pairs (6 total), but to each one pair is a bit shorter because the feathers of the top later are at different heights . (pic 9)

10. Glue them onto your top bed and add some gold thumbtacks for detail (pic 10)

11. Gum the top layer to the lower layer. (motion-picture show 11)

12. Try it on with your hooded cape. The plumage should sit in a higher place the shoulder. (pic 12-17)

Step 21: Polished!

Now that you are officially done, just a few things to consider.

1. Sample prohibited different poses. I like-minded the operational position with the flaming blades

2.Preceptor't get too reckless with the blades when you play with them. They can still tear out of you are striking things with them.

3. Go find other District of Columbia and Batman Characters.

4. Besides exceptional thanks to the amazing photographers (David Nongovernmental organization) to make this cause look fantastic.
